If you are familiar with feng shui, you know that a clear and organized space is essential for good energy flow. And if you have been following my career path, you will know how important sustainable design is to me. But did you know that clearing space can also be done sustainably? By using these eco-friendly tips to declutter your home, you can not only create a harmonious living environment but also make a positive impact on the planet.

  1. Donate to Charity or Non-Profit Organizations: One of the best ways to get rid of unwanted items in your home is by donating them to charity or non-profit organizations. Many organizations accept donations of furniture, clothing, and other household items, and will even come and pick them up from your home. Donating to charity not only helps people in need but also reduces waste and the environmental impact of producing new items. I especially love donating to Habitat ReStore and Austin Pets Alive.

  2. Host a Swap Party: Another way to get rid of items you no longer need is by hosting a swap party with friends or neighbors. This is a fun and social way to exchange items that you no longer need for things that are useful to you. I am currently swapping overgrown plant cuttings with neighbors, everyone loves it!

  3. Sell Items Online: If you have items that are in good condition and could be used by someone else, consider selling them online. There are many online platforms such as Facebook Marketplace, The Real Real, and Craigslist where you can list items for sale. This not only keeps our clutter out of the landfill, but it also helps you make some extra cash.

  4. Recycle or Upcycle: If you have items that cannot be donated or sold, consider recycling or upcycling them. Recycling allows you to give new life to materials that would otherwise be thrown away. Upcycling involves repurposing an item into something new and useful, which can be a fun and creative way to reduce waste.

  5. Take Hazardous Materials to a Special Collection Facility: Some household items such as batteries, light bulbs, and electronics can contain hazardous materials that should not be disposed of in the regular trash. Instead, take these items to a special collection facility where they can be disposed of safely and properly.

There are many ways to get rid of household items in a sustainable way. By donating, swapping, selling, recycling, or upcycling, you can reduce waste, help others, and protect the environment. So next time you are clearing out your home, consider these sustainable options before throwing things away. By incorporating these feng shui tips into your clear space routine, you can create a more harmonious and sustainable living environment for yourself as well as the planet.
